Gryphons are frequently depicted with a lion-type body, bird-type head and torso, wings, feathers or fur, and with various types of creature tails. Some are more like a lion, more like a bird, or more like a serpent. Contradictory personas have appeared in fiction and history. They have been good or evil, gentle or vicious, and their talons have either been poisonous or detected poison. Gryphons have been likened or mistaken for other similar creatures such as the phoenix, hippogryph, sphinx, and rukhs or rocs.
