Born on November 8, 1900, Margaret 'Peggy' Mitchell is the celebrated Pulitzer Prize winning author of 'Gone With The Wind'. A journalist and newswoman in Atlanta, Georgia, Mitchell wrote the majority of the novel from 1926 until 1929 while she was recuperating from a broken ankle in the small apartment she shared with her second husband. Wanting to keep her writing efforts a secret from her friends, she would cover her Remington typewriter and loose papers with a towel whenever guests would visit. A fourth-generation Atlantan, Mitchell briefly attended Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. She was married twice. Once to Berrien Kinnard Upshaw and once to John Robert Marsh. An intelligent, spirited woman, Mitchell spent much of her post-novel life fiercely protecting the copyright of 'Gone With The Wind'. Mitchell died on August 16, 1949 after being hit by a taxi. Per her request, the original manuscript was destroyed except for a few pages. As of 2006, the book has sold over 30,000,000 copies sold worldwide.
