Based on the book of the same name by H.G. "Buzz" Bissinger, the movie depicts the 1988 Odessa Permian Panthers football team's journey to the state semifinals, and the impact of high school football on their hometown of Odessa, Texas. The movie stars Billy Bob Thornton and was directed by Peter Berg.
