Born Steven Paul Smith in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1969, the "folk-punk" singer-songwriter was a member of the band Heatmiser. The use of his songs in the movie "Good Will Hunting" brought him mainstream recognition, as well as a Best Original Song Academy Award nomination for "Miss Misery." Smith released six full-length solo albums; the last, "From a Basement on the Hill," was released posthumously, as was "New Moon," a two-disc compilation of rare and unreleased songs recorded during his time with the Kill Rock Stars label. Smith's death on Oct. 21, 2003, was initially reported as an apparent suicide, but its cause was ruled inconclusive.
