Composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) was an icon of American culture throughout much of the twentieth century. He wrote for stage (ballet, musical, and opera), orchestra, and voice. Among his noted achievements are the score for West Side Story, his opera Candide, the Jeremiah Symphony, and--even though Jewish--a setting of the Roman Mass.
