German Romantic period composer Friedrich Flotow (1812-1883) came from a noble family. He studied at Paris Conservatoire and embarked on a compositional career most defined by his operas. Of these, Martha, oder Der Markt zu Richmond was most popular and it remained part of the repertoire, both as a production and in individual arias.
