Locke, MatthewWeb Directory

English Baroque composer Matthew Locke (c.1621/2-1677) helped to bring English opera to fruition, even though his musical contribution to the first known true opera is lost. His low profile during the Puritan rule was replaced by an active schedule in the court of Charles II, following the Restoration. Whether for religious or professional reasons is unknown, but Locke converted to Catholicism and became official organist to the queen in 1662.
