Johan Helmich Roman (1694-1758) was a central figure in Sweden's musical life during the post-Thirty Years War era of peace. He is regarded as one of the finest composers in the nation's history. He studied in England, then journeyed through England, France, Italy and Germany, gaining a rich knowledge of musical trends elsewhere. Thus, he could introduce Handel to Swedish audiences while also producing his own occasionl music, sacred choral works, sacred and secular songs, and works for instrumental ensembles.
