Russian born Alfred Harrievich Schnittke (1934-1998) claimed to be half Jewish and half German. He wrote in a variety of styles, sometimes accepting, at other times rejecting the Post-modernism of his time. He wrote symphonic, chamber, solo instrument, and vocal music as well as three operas, the best known of which is Historia von D. Johann Fausten.
