Romantic composer Bedrich Smetana was born in 1824 in Litomysl, Bohemia, the son of a brewer. A child prodigy, he played the piano before the Austrian emperor in 1830. He took part in a failed uprising against Austrian rule. Later, he founded his own music school in Prague. He married pianist Katerina Kolárová. They moved to Sweden for a time, then back to Prague. Katerina died and he wed Bettina Ferdinandová. Soon after, he returned to Prague for good. His hearing began to fail him and he died in an asylum in 1884. His masterpiece is probably The Bartered Bride.
