Austrian-born Maximilian Raoul Walter Steiner (1888-1971) is among the foremost movie composers. Some would even label him the "Dean of Film Music Composers." He studied in Vienna under Groedner, Fuchs, and Mahler, completing the Imperial Academy of Music's four year course in one year. He began work in England in 1906 but left in 1914 due to tensions from the impending war in Europe. Fifteen years were spent on Broadway, composing and conducting shows by George Gershwin, Victor Herbert, Jerome Kern, and others. In 1929 he moved to Hollywood, scoring over 300 films over the next forty-plus years.
