Strauss, Johann, Jr.Web Directory

Austrian Romantic period composer and conductor Johann Strauss, Jr. (1825-1899) was discouraged by his father from entering a musical career. His mother encouraged him and he secretly took violin lessons, eventually becoming better known than Johann, Sr. He finally earned the title of Waltz King because of the number and quality of his compositions and because of the tours he made promoting his dance music with his own orchestra. His waltz The Blue Danube is his best known work and of his operettas, Die Fledermaus shines both musically and in its libretto.
