Austrian Romantic composer and conductor Josef Strauss (1827-1870) was the second son of Johann Strauss, Sr. to embark upon a musical career. Brother Johann called him "the more gifted of us two." Like his brothers, he first trained for another field; his first specialty was mechanical engineering. His most noted compositions are Village Swallows from Austria and Music of the Spheres, as well as the Pizzicato Polka, which he co-wrote with Johann, Jr.
