Russian late Romantic composer Sergey (or Sergei) Ivanovich Taneyev (1856-1915), a pupil of Tchaikovsky was also an acclaimed teacher (including Scriabin and Rachmaninov) and pianist (soloist in the first Moscow performance of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1). His works tend to balance his Russian heritage and the nationalist movement with a European-influenced cosmopolitan polish and often exhibit his love for counterpoint with fugues and canons.
