Tobias, RudolfWeb Directory

Estonian composer Rudolf Tobias (1873-1918) was born in Käina on the island of Hiiumaa. His father was the Lutheran parish clerk and kantor. Tobias' abilities led him to the St. Petersburg Conservatoire, where he studied organ under Louis Homilius and composition from Rimski-Korsakov. His graduate work was the cantata "Johannes Damascenus." He worked abroad for most of his adult life, dying in Germany while teaching at the Berlin Royal Academy of Music.
