From beginnings as a trumpet player for the Lionel Hampton big band in the late 1940s, rose to become the pre-eminent jazz composer and arranger of the late 20th century, a peer of Henry Mancini and Nelson Riddle. Known for film scores and television themes but also enormously successful as a pop record producer. Created Michael Jackson's "Thriller," which held the record for best-selling album of all time for many years, and "We Are the World," the famine relief recording in which dozens of top musical stars participated at his request.
