John Wayne -actor, born 26 May 1907, Winterset, Iowa, USA, died (from cancer) 11 June 1979, Los Angeles, California, USA. Appeared in nearly 250 movies, many of them westerns, including Stagecoach (1939), The Alamo (1960). He received an Oscar for his role as Rooster Cogburn in True Grit (1969).
