Credit unions are non-profit, cooperative financial institutions, owned and operated by the members. There are over 10,000 credit unions in the United States, with many more in other countries. Most credit unions are local, serving members in a specific geographic area, or serving the employees of a single company. Some have become national or international, growing either through mergers, expansions or simply by serving a member group that is global.
