TCP/IP load-balancing products and technologies allow you to run a network service (like mail or Web servers) on a cluster of machines to attain high availability and scalability. They come in "local" and "global" flavors, meaning they can be used to create a cluster of machines sitting on the same LAN or in several distant geographical areas. Some products can do both, and some specialize in one of the two forms.
