SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) is more commonly known as "Cot Death" or "Crib Death". Technically it doesn't relate to a specific type of death, rather the term is used to refer to any sudden and unexplained death of an apparently healthy baby under 1 year of age.
Key risk factors include smoking by the mother (or in the mother's presence) during pregnancy, exposure to tobacco smoke after birth, sleeping arrangements (important to ensure baby is not too hot/too heavily wrapped) and sleeping position (babies should be set to sleep on their backs to minimize risk).
"Reduce the risk" campaigns, designed to promote awareness of key risk factors, have significantly reduced the instance of cot deaths in industrialized countries over the past couple of decades.
