Type 1 diabetes is a lifelong disease that occurs when the pancreas stops producing insulin because of an immune attack and destruction of cells within the pancreas that produce insulin. Previously known as juvenile diabetes. Type 1 patients are insulin dependent and have to inject or use an insulin pump to manage their condition.
