Bronchitis is inflammation of the lining of the tubes that lead from the windpipe (trachea) to the lungs. The lining becomes irritated and produces more mucus, making it difficult to breathe.
Acute bronchitis is usually caused by viruses and lasts only a short time. Chronic bronchitis lasts much longer and may also be caused by smoking.
