Measles, also called Rubeola, is a very contagious, viral disease. Known for the skin rash, measles is actually a respiratory infection.

Spread by coughing and sneezing, it starts with a runny nose, red eyes that are sensitive to light, hacking cough, and high fever. Then, spots appear inside the mouth. In 1 to 2 days, the rash starts. The rash can be blotchy and appear in several places at once, or patches can join together, or it can just be on the face and trunk.

Sometimes kids with measles also get ear infections or pneumonia. This virus can cause swelling in the lungs, the heart, or the brain.

There is a vaccine to prevent measles.
