Sickle Cell Anemia is an inherited disease in which the red blood cells change shape and cause small clots. It primarily affects people of African descent.
Symptoms include joint and bone pain, feeling tired, shortness of breath, rapid heart rate, and sores on the legs. Sickle cell anemia also slows growth and can delay puberty.
Treatments are used to help symptoms. They include folic acid to help build new red blood cells, antibiotics to manage infections, and wound care or surgery for ulcers on the lower legs. There is no cure.
