"Established in 1841 in what now is known as 'Historical Settlement of Colorado', as a residence place for the people who suffered housing problems due to the Cartago earthquake. Very few families were willing to move to the region, but from that small group Turrialba was born, at that moment it was called 'El Guayabal' and it remained with the same name even after the arrival of first train service in 1886. With the arrival of the train the name was changed to 'Villa de Turrialba'. Today Turrialba is located in a valley that carries its name and in the slopes of the Turrialba Volcano. It is located 620 meters above sea level. Its principal activity is the agriculture – coffee plantations, sugar cane and macadamia nuts. In the region you can find important sugar cane, coffee and macadamia nuts processing installations. Turrialba has an approximate population of 70,000 inhabitants.
