Jokkmokk Municipality is the second-largest municipality of Sweden in terms of its area which is slightly smaller than the US state of New Jersey. In 2005, the population was about 6000. The name Jokkmokk is Sámi and means "river bend".
The seat of local government is Jokkmokk Town, where a large market has taken place every year since 1605; other important townships are Vuollerim, Kåbdalis and Porjus. Large parts of the municipality are taken up by the national parks Sarek, Stora Sjöfallet and Padjelanta.
