Clare is sixteen miles south west of Bury St. Edmund's, nine north west of Sudbury and seven miles west of Haverhill. It is an ancient town because it was a frontier town in the kingdom of East Anglia. It has the remains of an Augustine priory, founded in 1248 by Richard de Clare.
