City and market town on the edge of Salisbury Plain, 135 km southwest of London . Population approximately 40000, an agricultural centre, and industries include brewing and engineering. The cathedral of St Mary, built 1220/58, an example of Early English architecture; its spire at 123 m/404 ft is the highest in England. The cathedral library contains one of only four copies of the Magna Carta. Situated at the confluence of four rivers, Salisbury is the only city within the county of Wiltshire .
