Zihuatanejo is renowned worldwide for its sportfishing, having abundant varieties of both deep-sea and coastal species. Some local species of fish commonly found in the area are Sailfish, Marlin, Dorado, Tuna, Roosterfish, Spanish Mackeral, Jack Crevalle and Shark. Being originally a fishing town it also has a small commercial fishing fleet made up principally of various "cooperativas". Most local fishermen fish using hand-lines from open boats called pangas. The sportfishing fleet includes yachts, cruisers and pangas.
