Born in East Haddam, Connecticut on December 26, 1837, Morgan Bulkeley grew up in Hartford then moved to Brooklyn, New York where he achieved business success. During the Civil War, he served with the Thirteeneth New York Regiment. After the war, he returned to Hartford and quickly became one of the most prominent men in the city. Bulkeley served as president of the Hartford Dark Blues base ball team and when the National League was formed, he was elected unanimously as its first president. He entered local politics, becoming Mayor of Hartford in 1880, serving four terms. In 1889, he become governor of Connecticut and went on to become a U.S. Senator.
