This subcategory contains sites pertaining to the United States Senate, the upper legislative body of the US Congress. The makeup of the Senate is determined by the US Constitution. Each state elects two Senators who serve staggered 6-year terms so that one third of the Senate is replaced every 2 years. The 17th Amendment, ratified in 1913, allows for the direct election of Senators; previously, senators had been chosen by the state legislators. Members of the US Senate must be 30 years of age, a resident of the state from which s/he is elected, and a US citizen for at least 9 years.
