Each state elects two Senators who serve staggered 6-year terms so that one third of the Senate is replaced every 2 years. The 17th Amendment, ratified in 1913, allows for the direct election of Senators; previously, senators had been chosen by the state legislators. Members of the US Senate must be 30 years of age, a resident of the state from which s/he is elected, and a US citizen for at least 9 years.
