Benton County was created in 1837 and named for Thomas Hart Benton, a United States Senator from Missouri. It is in the eastern part of the state and is bounded by Black Hawk, Buchanan, Linn, Iowa, and Tama counties. The present land area is 716 square miles, and the population in 2000 was 25,308. The county seat is Vinton.
