James K. Polk (1795-1849), a Jacksonian Democrat, was the eleventh president of the United States, elected in 1844. One of the strongest proponents of "Manifest Destiny," his administration saw the annexation of the Oregon Territory south of the 49th parallel through a treaty with Britain, as well as most of what is now the American Southest by precipitating a war with Mexico.
