The impact of Napoleon's invasion of Egypt, encroaching European colonial powers, and the rapid decline of the Ottoman Caliphate prompted deep soul-searching among many Muslim thinkers. A major thread in this ferment was an idea of returning to the roots of Muslim faith, to rediscover the vitality and strength to withstand the external pressures.
