Through the amalgamation of the Atlantic Inter-Collegiate Athletic Association (AIAA) and the Atlantic Women's Inter-Collegiate Athletic Association (AWIAA), the Atlantic Universities Athletic Association (AUAA) was formed in April, 1974. The former has been in operation since the late 19th century as the Maritime Inter-Collegiate Athletic Association, changing its name from Maritime to Atlantic in 1969, with the acceptance of Memorial University into intercollegiate athletics. Later, the name was changed to Atlantic University Sport. Atlantic University Sport is composed of eleven member institutions from the Atlantic Provinces. Each member university must have at least one team that competes at the varsity level in an Atlantic University Sport Championship. Atlantic University Sport hosts championships in 12 different sports including basketball, cross country, field hockey, football, hockey, rugby, soccer, swimming, track & field, volleyball and wrestling.
