Hashing is the running game of Hare and Hounds as practiced by the Hash House Harriers. The best evidence is that Hare and Hounds has been played since at least the 18th century, while the Hash House Harriers were founded in 1938 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Since then, chapters (or "kennels") of the Hash House Harriers have been established in cities around the world. In Hare and Hounds, a runner or group of runners is designated as the Hare. The Hare sets out and lays a trail cross country, using intermittent marks of paper, flour, chalk, or some other convenient substance. Later, the other runners (the Hounds) set out to follow the trail. The Hare will complicate the Hounds' mission by laying false trails and other "checks" to confuse them. Afer completing the trail, Hashers usually have a somewhat irreverent ceremony and a prolonged social gathering, although customs vary. Most Hashers also drink beer, but only before, during, and after the trail.
