There are many Olympic medalists and world champions in figure skating, but only a few are all of those things and more. British ice dancers Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean introduced new concepts and themes transforming the sport from a mirror of ballroom dancing to a balletic and artistic interpretation suitable for ice and stage. At a time when figure skating attracted attention only during the Olympic years, Torvill and Dean brought the sport into the world's attention first with their sensuous free dance of Ravel's Bolero to their enormously popular ice shows.
