Airdrieonians F.C. Ltd were liquidated 01 May 2002. The Scottish Football League voted on 18 June 2002 to reject Airdrie United's bid to replace Airdrieonians FC in the league in the 3rd Division. Clydebank FC were in administration and looking for a buyer. The chairman of Airdrie United offered to buy Clydebank for £160,000 if the League Management Committee would agree to let him change the name of Clydebank to Airdrie United, change the strip to an Airdrieonians strip and play league games at New Broomfield, the former Airdrieonians stadium. This was agreed and Airdrie United took Clydebank's place in the 2nd Division. The new Clydebank FC play Non_League in SJFA West Region - Abercorn Central District League.
