Bijapur was the capital of the Adil Shahi kings (1489-1686), one of the five splinter states formed when the Brahmani Muslim kingdom broke up in 1482. It is dotted with mosques, mausoleums, palaces, and fortifications including the famous Golgumbaz, whose vast dome is said to be the world’s second largest.
