Presidents

The office of President (Reichspräsident, 1919-1934; Bundespräsident;, 1949-) is that of the head of state (as opposed to head of government) of the German republican state. The office of the head of state of East Germany (1949-1990) was not called President but President of the Council of State.

The Reichspräsident of the Weimar Republic (1919-1933) had considerable political power; the Bundespräsident of the federal Republic of Germany has more of a ceremonial/moral leadership function and is not expected to be participate in controversial/party political debates.
