The Samaritans are an ancient people based in northern Israel. There origins are Jewish but they split with the Jewish community in antiquity over doctrinal issues. They accept the Torah with variations including a distinct version of the Ten Commandments and their rituals are centred around Mount Gerizim. Today they number no more than a few hundred people with roughly half their community living in the Palestinian Authority near Mount Gerizim and half in the Israeli state.
