During the fifth century, Patrick took the message of Christianity from his homeland to the country of Ireland. Before his death on March 17, 460, Patrick planted more than 2,000 churches in the nation. A few centuries later, he was named the patron saint of Ireland.
Today, people around the world celebrate March 17 as St. Patrick's Day.
For some, especially in Ireland, the day is observed as a religious holiday. Most, however, simply celebrate the rich heritage and traditions of Ireland by wearing green, dancing a jig, and plucking a shamrock or two.
