Market research suppliers are firms which carry out market research(!), usually on a contract basis for other firms who do not have the resources with which to do this themselves. A research project can be broken down (broadly) in to 4 main stages; 1) Initial consultancy and research design - a firm may know what it wants to achieve (e.g. possible audience for a new product/service) but may not have any idea as to how these results can/should be obtained. 2) Fieldwork/data collection - whether qualitative or quantitative approaches are chosen, someone must carry out the interviewing. 3) Data processing & analysis; a) Qualitative - as only a relatively small amount of interviewing is conducted this will be done by the executives responsible for interviewing. b)Quantitative - the results from a large number of interviews must be collated and tabulated prior to analysis. 4) Interpretation - the findings must be interpreted to relate to the original questions set by the objectives. Companies that are able to conduct all four stages of the process supply a 'full service'. Other companies exist and specialise in one or more of the stages.
