The town of Doncaster is situated to the North-East of Sheffield, on the River Don.
The town is on the site of a Roman fort which was thought to have been known as Danum.
The town is famous for its horse races which have taken place there since 1703. The St Leger race, held annually on Ladies Day, commenced in 1773 and is the world's oldest classic horse race.
