Cayucos, like most California communities, has a colorful history. Prior to the white man's entry, it is speculated that Native Americans most likely had hunting parties and even situated seasonal camps along the Cayucos coast. The earliest documented historical beginnings of Cayucos trace back to thriving ranches which preceded any organized settlements, such as a village. Names of notable families like Tognazzini, Donati, Righetti, Muscio dotted the landscape. Around 1855, a teacher by the name of John Baines realized the potential of the area now defined as Cayucos. He was soon joined by George Stone; together they founded the community of Old Creek at the crossroads of commerce connecting Paso Robles with the coast.
Cayucos is located on California's Central Coast, halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
