Pacifica means peace in Spanish but the city actually got the name as a result of a contest in 1957 when nine local communities along the coast, 15 miles south of San Francisco, incorporated. Pacifica was the location of Don Gaspar de Portola's camp, from which he lead the expedition responsible for the European discovery of San Francisco Bay in 1769.
