Chatham was settled in 1656 by a handful of Pilgrims, and incorporated in 1712. It is located in southeastern Massachusetts on Cape Cod and is bordered by Pleasant Bay and Orleans on the north, the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Nantucket Sound on the south, and Harwich on the west. Of its total 24.33 square miles, 16.43 square miles is land.
