Bend was originally called Farewell Bend because it was here that travelers over the pioneer roads had their last view of the river. Bend is almost at the geographic center of Oregon. It is the most populated city in central Oregon. To the east of Bend is high desert vegetation and to the west are U.S. Forest Service lands. Recreational activities include mountain biking, hiking, rafting, golfing, fishing, rock climbing, camping, downhill and cross country skiing, snowmobiling and sightseeing. In 2005, Bend was the sixth fastest growing city in the nation.
